RHEL 4 to support Indian languages

Yes that's right. RedHat plans to pick up all the work done by the localization groups in India and add all the GPL'ed stuff to RHEL. They plan on adding 5 new languages taking the supported languages count to 15 from 10 which was the case with RHEL 3.

And I'd be pretty damned if these supported languages turn out to be: Hindi, Gujrati, Bangla and Tamil. I can only imagine what the fifth one would be. The contenders are: Marathi, Kannada, Punjabi.


We'll see what comes off this :)

Microsoft to offer stripped-down XP in India

I guess MS is scared of developing countries picking up FOSS instead of properitary software. This must be the reason why India is being *honored* with a cheaper stripped-down version of the game.

Oops, did I say game!? Well, what is the definition of a game -- spending several hours of a day in front of your screen doing nothing productive -- that pretty much sums up the definition of Windows now doesn't it ;)

Free Software community loses one hacker

This is very sad. My heartfelt condolences to the family of Hans Bakker who succumbed to his injuries. This incident has been confirmed and was first reported on Wichert Akkerman -- aka Wiggy -- website

RMS also was travelling in the same car but had been just dropped off. The other occupants are out of danger.

Indic Localization Meet

Hi all

I know I've been gone a long time. I was in Mumbai attending the Indic Localization Meet held from 18-19. It was great fun to be there as I got to meet some of the localizaing greats of India :)


More details I shall put up later. I actually returned back to Delhi on the 22nd as you can imagine was dog tired :) So I've been reting these couple of days to get back into my daily routine. While discussing meets and conferences, let me also add that I was also present at the Linux Demo Day 2004, LDD2K4, organised by the ILUGD, India Linux Users Group Chapter Delhi, people. This one day event was also a huge success judging by the turnover of around 400 students. I'll put more details on this event later.

Novell's Linux Day road show

This is a sum-up of the Novel Linux day in Delhi. It was pretty exciting, especially for business folks as they got to hear what they wanted to hear :)

The presentations by Jeurgen Geck, CTO of SUSE Linux, were impressive and saved the day for Novell after Dr. Ashok Khemka, Joint Secretary (IT) from the state of Haryana, was through with his presentation.

This guy really got on my nerves on a couple of occassions and Mayank (my brother and the author of the article) had a tough time controlling me. This guy said that blokes from a Windows background were better off technically than their Open Source counterparts. How dare he? He also said that he wouldn't/doesn't promote OSS because of a lack of talent. I really think this guy needs a reality check.

The Top Seven MySQL Licensing Questions

This is very interesting, and its come up at the right time. I mean, you do a seminar anywhere and if the crowd is any intelligent and you are disccusing LAMP, bang, up come some of these questions.

I'd say that if you ever conduct a LAMP seminar/discussion just read this before you go. Make it part of your reference material. But this helps if you are a first timer, if you are a pro at LAMP, you probably already know this.

But it's still worthy of a read.
