Sun wants to buy Novell
If you read carefully, you'd see that Sun, or at least Schwartz believes in conquering IBM. He is not bothered about Novell. Seems to me the guy is too arrogant. If you, even if it's while sitting on your toilet seat, decide to acquire Novell, you'd think of keeping it to yourself. But not Schwartz. He has to blabber it out aloud.
Is it just me or do you too feel that he may be trying to picture Sun as if they are in 'complete control'/powerful position'? And that it can acquire Novell just to satisfy their whim? Hmm, seems to me like Sun is short on confidence. There is a saying, 'you atack those you are afraid of'. Looks like Sun is afraid of IBM, and of Novell to a certain extent. Maybe they know something we don't. Maybe it has something to do with what IBM plans for the near future.
But the best thing so far is the integrity check of IBM and Novell. Neither has ushered a word to counter Schwartz. Almost as if they knew it was coming. In any case, they are going to play cool and come out with some razor sharp comments. Novell are having a ball, they in no shape appear to be in any troubles, financial or otherwise. What with their certification set to hit out soon. Seems to me like Novell and IBM are both moving forward with definite plans while Sun has lost it's way.
And then Mr. Schwartz talk of RedHat. Sun is hell scared of RedHat, they blame them every now and again over petty issues. Now, they say that IBM is scared of RedHat. Why, why can't Sun just go on it's merry way of doing whatever it does and letting others do what they wish to. Let the better man stand tall. But no, Sun loves history and Microsoft. Over time Sun, to me, sounds more and more like Microsoft. All Linux vendors, especially RedHat is evil. And so is IBM.
Let's see what IBM and Sun have to say in their About section.
---------------
At IBM, we strive to lead in the invention, development and manufacture of the industry's most advanced information technologies, including computer systems, software, storage systems and microelectronics.
We translate these advanced technologies into value for our customers through our professional solutions, services and consulting businesses worldwide.
---------------
Since its inception in 1982, a singular vision - The Network is The Computer - has propelled Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq: SUNW) to its position as a leading provider of industrial-strength hardware, software, and services that make the Net work. Sun can be found in more than 100 countries and on the World Wide Web.
---------------Seeing this I feel that Sun is short on confidence. They want to portrait to others that they are Big. They spend more lines talking about where all sun is, than about the initiatives it's undertaken. But IBM is smart, they know that the Sun shines everywhere, it shines equally for all and it doesn't boast about itself. That's IBM's mantra too. IBM is definetely more Sun than Sun.
Let's wait and watch if all the pole scratching by the cat gets it anywhere near the top.
